      <image:caption>Each medium requires its own communication strategy. And let’s get the obvious out of the way — Twitter is very frequently just the worst. It rewards cynicism and maximalism disproportionately. But it’s still a necessity.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Some of the more interesting campaign work in my career was helping to expand Nextdoor’s market penetration across the country. It opened my eyes to what an undiscovered opportunity the social media platform for neighborhoods is in bringing people together. Perhaps most importantly, usage is surging during the quarantine.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>While written word and photos are an effective way to communicate, video is probably the closest simulation you’ll get to actual face to face speaking. And while all the platforms allow for video, Youtube is the only built wholly around the medium. And furthermore, if you do it right, Youtube will even suggest your video to potential supporters.</image:caption>

Some quick tips for what makes a good photo: Action shots are better. Fill the frame, avoid negative space. Lighting matters.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide -  The Dos and Don’ts of Webcasting - Do consider your press strategy.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Some events should be amplified by the media, some shouldn’t. A volunteer training, for example, might not want the extra attention. But if you do hope to capture some earned media, be aggressive in getting your event on the radar of potential guests. Once you’ve shared the event information with them once, remind them again in a reasonable amount of time to not come across as too pushy but with enough notice so that they can plan to join you. Your event is likely not the only option they have at this moment. Holding all events virtually is a double-edged sword: individuals(press or otherwise) will find it easier to attend your event, as well as any other that happens to be at the same time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - Digital Field Organizing - Relational organizing</image:title>
      <image:caption>Every campaign has a set of unique assets - the individuals who work or volunteer for it and the relationships those individuals bring with them. In relational organizing, campaigns ask their own volunteers and staff to personally reach out to those networks in whatever manner they choose, rather than a group of voters identified through data defined demographic criteria.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - Digital Field Organizing - Engaging online through coordinated direct action</image:title>
      <image:caption>In a recent interview, I was asked by a member of the audience “how do we make our priorities heard by our legislators?” I explained the real challenge is that lawmakers are human beings, and on any given day, there are hundreds of incoming requests, messages, or complaints that their brains are trying to filter. Consequently, elected officials look for patterns to identify repeated themes or statements and address those first. If a voice is one of a thousand different screaming varied messages in cacophony, it can get lost. That same challenge exists for campaigns trying to get their message to break through in this crowded media environment.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - Digital Field Organizing - Virtual Events</image:title>
      <image:caption>We discussed how to use webcasts as virtual events in this new normal, but this needs to be repeated - for every event a campaign conducts, data (a phone number or an email address) collection is key. Once you have that information, timely follow-up is a must. Volunteering for a campaign or a cause is an impulsive decision, and impulse has a half-life - it decays as other impulses compete for a person’s attention. Good organizers reach out to prospective volunteers with a personalized follow-up within 24 - 48 hours. If this sounds a little labor intensive, consider applications like Mobilize.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - Digital Field Organizing - Be Creative</image:title>
      <image:caption>These unprecedented times will likely require equally unprecedented tactics that aren’t covered here. In the past few weeks, campaigns have employed influencer partnerships, social media challenges, online movie nights, and online trivia about their neighborhoods as a means of expanding their name identification and data collection with potential voters and engaging their supporters. A good organizer should keep their ear to the ground and gratuitously steal from other successful operatives.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5e8b850267c27c64528d62e2/t/5eb87631181d7d1aa6baec41/1589147200621/</image:loc>
      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - Digital Field Organizing - Texting</image:title>
      <image:caption>As phone banking contact rates have declined, more and more campaigns turned to sending text messages directly to voters. This is subdivided into two categories:</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - Digital Field Organizing - Phonebanking</image:title>
      <image:caption>The old reliable becomes the new hot skill. With door to door canvassing no longer available, many campaigns have returned to calling a targeted group of voters over the phone. If you can’t have face to face conversations, it’s the next best thing. However, this tactic has been declining in efficacy over the last several cycles.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - On Relational Organizing with Sangeeth Peruri, Co-Founder and CEO of Outreach Circle - Sangeeth - I think you always start with the relationship. When I do these conversations, I’m catching up and saying “hey, how’s the family?” These days it’s all about Covid, how’s shelter in place treating you, and then I’ll go into “hey, the reason I reached out is because this cause or campaign is really important to me. I thought this might be important to you as well. And I wanted to run it by you and get your thoughts.”</image:title>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - On Relational Organizing with Sangeeth Peruri, Co-Founder and CEO of Outreach Circle</image:title>
      <image:caption>Sangeeth - It depends on if it’s partisan versus non-partisan, local versus national. The more non-partisan it is, the less likely you are to run into any issues, the more local it is, the less likely you are to run into any issues. But if it’s national or partisan, it gets trickier. One thing you can always do is you don’t have to necessarily ask a person for a vote or a donation, you can just ask them if they want to learn more. Having someone join a meet and greet, that’s a pretty innocent ask. That’s a pretty good strategy. If they’re not even willing to learn more, you’re not going to be able to ask them to do anything, so it’s a pretty good filter.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Digital Organizing Guide - On Relational Organizing with Sangeeth Peruri, Co-Founder and CEO of Outreach Circle - Sangeeth - I said the single biggest mistake. The single biggest advice I would give for a local race, congressional or smaller - focus on school communities. Parents are by far the most engaged, and the most connected, and they trust other parents. So if you want to win a local race, if you’re outspent massively, make a list of every single school, private, charter, in your community, try to meet at least one leader early, get to know them, and see if they can arrange a meet and greet for you</image:title>
      <image:caption>There is no faster or more efficient way of winning votes but it only works if you do it early.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Mitchel - I remember when I was watching one of this internet marketers, Dean Grassiosi. What he did was actually burn his book. So you’re scrolling through your feed, suddenly you see a burning book, and you go “what is this?” He said that actual ad jumped up all of his sales.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Mitchel - I would say the rule of thirds, which means you split up your screen in three sections - the left, the middle, and the right. So you would place yourself in the middle, left, or the right. What that does is create symmetry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - A decade’s worth of organizing …</image:title>
      <image:caption>After witnessing the housing crisis unfold in front of his eyes, David became involved in politics on Senator Barbara Boxer’s campaign as a political intern. From assisting with veteran’s constituency in a contentious year and working to win endorsements for the Senator from conservative elected officials, he came to realize that we all want the same things, we just have different ways of getting there. David went on to organize for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, the Action to End the Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy, Scouts for Equality, the social media start up Nextdoor, managed several ballot measures, and most recently served as the Virginia State Director for Senator Amy Klobuchar.</image:caption>
